Prasar Bharati Chairman stresses on need for respecting political diversity during election coverage

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash has stressed on the need for respecting political diversity along with that of cultural and linguistic during the election coverage. He said the elections provide an opportunity to learn more about the various social and economic aspects of the country.

Mr Surya Prakash stated this while inaugurating a joint conference on coverage of General Elections- 2019 organized by News Services Division of All India Radio and DD News. The Chairman cautioned against the paid news saying the AIR (News) and DD News people have to be always on their guard so that no one can accuse them of being biased.

The Chairman said, covering elections require a lot of planning and people must have a clear idea of guidelines for the poll coverage. He also stressed on credibility and ensuring balance in political coverage.

Speaking on the occasion, Information and Broadcasting  Secretary Amit Khare said, AIR (News) and DD News are known for their credibility which is very important in the present time. He highlighted that it is not important to be fast in news but to be correct.  Mr Khare said election coverage should be such that it brings glory to the organization.

Prasar Bharati CEO, Shashi Shekhar Vempati emphasized on the need for better coordination between the two organizations. He said, AIR (News) and DD News have to be an authoritative source of truth and this is going to be extremely important for upcoming general elections. He said, unfortunately in recent times, the truth has become a casualty and sensationalism has taken over in media.

Mr Vempati also underlined the importance of social media in the upcoming elections saying this poll will be heavily influenced by social media.  Prasar Bharati Member Finance, Rajiv Singh talked about authenticity and timeliness of news broadcast by AIR (News) and DD News.

Director General, Doordarshan, Supriya Sahu stressed the need for advance planning, proper technical support and funding for better election coverage. Director General, AIR (News) Ira Joshi said the AIR (News) is taking many initiatives for providing credible information to the people.

She also cited how Finance Minister interview was live broadcast after the recent Interim Budget. Director General, DD ( News) Mayank Kumar Agrawal also expressed his views. Principal DG PIB Sitanshu Kar and others were also present in the event.

On the occasion, two books – Veterans Recall Radio Days and Guidelines: A Handbook for News Services Division were also released. The two-day national workshop has been organized to sensitize AIR(News) and DD News people about various aspects of coverage and reporting of the next general elections. The officers and correspondents in different Regional Units are participating in the conference.
