The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM today following protests by opposition parties over the violence in Delhi. As soon as the House met on the opening day of the second part of Budget Session, Chairman M Venkiah Naidu while referring to the adjournment motion moved by Opposition members over the issue, said priority should be given to bring normalcy in the North Eastern parts of the national capital. He said the matter should be taken up after attaining normalcy. However, members from Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Left, DMK, BSP, Aam Aadmi Party and others, continued to press for their demand to raise the issue.
Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad accused the government of being silent for three days when the violence was underway. Responding to this, Leader of the House, Thawar Chand Gehlot objected to his comment saying that return of normalcy should be the top priority. As noisy scenes continued, Chairman adjourned the House till 2 PM.
Earlier, Mr Naidu gave an account on the functioning of the different Standing Committees of the House during the recess and urged party leaders to ensure maximum presence of the members in such committees. The members also observed silence as a mark of respect to the passing away of the former member A V Swamy.
